Choosing a PoE switch

A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch sends power and data down the same network cable, so IP phones, Wi-Fi access points and IP cameras need no separate power adapter. Every switch here supports VLANs, so voice, data and cameras can run on separate networks. Powering phones? See our refurbished Cisco IP phones. Need ports without PoE? PoE or PoE+, 24 or 48 ports?

Count the devices you need to power, then check how much power each one draws.

PoE (802.3af)

Up to 15.4W per port, enough for most IP desk phones and basic access points and cameras.

PoE+ (802.3at)

Up to 30W per port, for higher-power devices such as dual-band Wi-Fi access points, PTZ cameras and video phones.

Check the power budget

The switch's total PoE budget limits how many devices run at full power. For example, 24 devices drawing 15.4W each need about 370W, so compare the budget with what you plan to connect.

Refurbished PoE switches: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PoE and PoE+?

PoE (IEEE 802.3af) supplies up to 15.4W per port and PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) up to 30W per port. PoE+ switches also power standard PoE devices, so choose PoE+ if you have, or may add, higher-power access points or cameras.

How many devices can a PoE switch power?

It depends on the switch's total PoE budget and what each device draws. Add up the power of every device you will connect and make sure it is below the budget; we can check this for you before you order.

Can I use a PoE switch for CCTV cameras?

Yes. PoE switches are widely used to power IP cameras. Check each camera's power draw, and use PoE+ ports for cameras with heaters, infrared or pan-tilt-zoom motors.

What warranty do refurbished PoE switches have?

Networking equipment is covered by our standard 12-month warranty on refurbished hardware, from delivery or collection.
