Dell PowerEdge 14th Gen

The 14th generation brought Xeon Scalable processors, faster memory and iDRAC9 to PowerEdge. See every model in our Dell PowerEdge servers range or our full range of refurbished servers.

Which 14th Gen PowerEdge model?

All 14th Gen models take two Xeon Scalable processors and have iDRAC9. They differ in size, memory slots and drive bays.

R640: dense 1U compute

24 memory slots in 1U, for virtualisation hosts and databases where rack space is tight.

R740: general purpose 2U

24 memory slots plus more PCIe slots, including room for GPUs, and quieter cooling than 1U.

R740xd: storage density

The R740 built for storage, with up to 24 2.5" or 12 3.5" front bays for software-defined storage and large databases.

R440 and R540: entry models

Lower cost 1U (R440) and 2U (R540) servers with fewer memory slots. The R540 takes 3.5" drives for storage.

Dell PowerEdge 14th Gen: frequently asked questions

What processors do 14th Gen PowerEdge servers use?

First and second generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum), such as the Silver 4110, Gold 6140 and Gold 6254.

Is a 14th Gen server worth the extra over 13th Gen?

For heavy virtualisation, databases and long service life, yes: more cores, faster memory and better efficiency. For lighter workloads a 13th Gen server is better value.

What memory do 14th Gen PowerEdge servers take?

DDR4 registered (RDIMM) or load-reduced (LRDIMM) ECC memory, at up to 2666MT/s with first generation Xeon Scalable processors and up to 2933MT/s with some second generation models. Do not mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in one server.
