Choosing a RAID level for a storage server

RAID decides how much of your raw capacity you can use and how many drives can fail without losing data. Usable space below is before formatting.

RAID 6: best for large arrays

Survives two drive failures, which matters with big 3.5" drives that take many hours to rebuild. Eight 8TB drives give 48TB usable.

RAID 10: best for speed

Mirrored pairs, striped. Fast for databases and virtual machines, and survives one failure per pair, but you lose half the raw capacity.

HBA (IT mode): for TrueNAS and ZFS

Software-defined storage manages the drives itself, so it needs the drives passed through an HBA rather than a hardware RAID controller.

Why choose a server with 3.5" bays for storage?

3.5" drives offer far more capacity per rand than 2.5" drives, up to 10TB or more per bay, which makes them the right choice for backups, file archives, NAS and CCTV storage.

Can I run TrueNAS or Veeam on a refurbished server?

Yes. Enterprise servers suit TrueNAS, Unraid, Veeam repositories and Windows file servers. For ZFS-based NAS, ask us about an HBA (IT mode) instead of a hardware RAID controller.
